The Shodo, "Ho Wa Gojyu Wo Tondo Su" reads in English, "The way of inhaling and exhaling is both Hard and Soft." Another interpretation is "The Laws of the Universe requires both give and take."

This Shodo was a favourite poetic line of Master Miyagi Chojun. In the late 1920's, Miyagi Sensei named his particular Ryu-ha of Okinawa-Te to Goju-ryu from this line taken from the Hakku Kempo (Chinese Boxing Eight Poem)
